Safeway employees across Manitoba are ready to strike. On Monday, Mar. 5, the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 832 (UFCW), who represent Safeway workers within the province, confirmed that its membership had voted 98 per cent in favour of a strike. Employees in Neepawa, Dauphin, Brandon, Thompson, and Winnipeg could potentially walk off the job after the current collective agreement expires on Mar. 17. A strike deadline has not been set.

Tuesday, March 1, 1938
Neepawa’s Saturday afternoon dog derby sponsored by Forrest Wilcox and Ron Guinn attracted hundreds of citizens and gave them plenty of thrills and laughs. The course ran from the C.N.R. station down Hamilton Street to Brown Avenue and the crowd lined both sides of the street to cheer the boys and girls as they urged their pups toward the big flag which marked the finishing line. Don Burnett’s “Pal” had little competition, trotting right along at a good pace, reaching the goal a few minutes before his nearest opponent caught up. “Rastus”, driven by Ray Gibbs was the next to cross the line, while Miss Elsie Stewart came in third with “Buster”.

It's not every hockey game where you get to see somebody punch a goalie in the face. If that's something you needed as a part of your life, you really should have been at the Yellowhead Arena on Saturday, Mar. 3, for game two of the Neepawa Farmers/Gladstone Lakers playoff series.

Fishing Derby held at Lake Irwin

There were 174 entries, including 26 ages 10 and under participants in the Neepawa Wildlife Association’s (NWA) Annual Fishing Derby, held on Saturday, Feb. 24 at Lake Irwin. In total, there were 84 northern pike caught at the Derby. Additional pictures from the day can be seen at the NWA’s Facebook page.
