Christmas is upon us, which means that so too is the season of sweets and baking. Last week’s Neepawa Banner & Press had a collection of seasonal recipes and no matter your taste — sweet or savoury, simple or extravagant— there’s a recipe out there. For many newspapers it has not been a good year financially. I guess that is obvious as recent news came out that over 30 daily papers, including one in Winnipeg, have been shut down. Now, in fairness, those papers were owned by two large companies who decided that having one paper in a town has better chance at success than two so they closed a bunch of papers to make way for what they hope will be a successful single paper.

Neepawa hosts 2017 Keith Jordan Memorial Tournament

This past weekend, Neepawa was home to some of Manitoba’s best female midget hockey teams at the third annual Keith Jordan Memorial Tournament. The event, which is named after the well respected local minor hockey official, who passed away in 2015, featured five teams from across the province, with Neepawa represented by the Natives Midget girls squad. Each team played one another during the round robin portion of the weekend, with the two teams with the best overall records playing in the championship game on Sunday, Dec. 17. The third and fourth ranked teams would also face off on Sunday in the consolation final.

This year, the Beautiful Plains Community Foundation provided $700 in support to the Breakfast Club, a volunteer run hockey skills development program for Neepawa-area children.
